Sree Sankara College was founded in the year 1954 by Swami Agamananda, an educationist and a foresighted scholar of Sri Ramakrishna Advaita Ashram. This College was established with a view to perpetuating the memory of Great Acharya, Saint Philosopher, Adi Sankaracharya and to develop Kalady, His birth place, as a prominent cultural centre. Adi Sankaracharya, a great personality of Indian Sub-continent, born at Kalady in 788 A.D. revived Sanathana Dharma and preached Advaita Philosophy. He founded four Ashrams at Puri, Sringeri, Dwaraka and Badri. The Mutt at Sringeri is known as Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham.

Sree Sankara College Association, has come true by starting a centre of higher learning at Kalady with two The foundation stone of the college was laid on the 28th August 1953 by His Highness the Maharaja of Travancore in the gracious presence of His Highness the Maharaja of Cochin and other distinguished persons. When the institution was founded this was the sole centre of higher education in a vast region. Still this is the only higher education centre in an area that covers nine panchayats. The vision and mission of the organization, major objectives. Naturally the first one was dissemination of knowledge in tune with the academic prescription of the University concerned. The second objective stresses on community development. This aims at providing leadership to various projects with a view to alleviating social problems faced by the people of the neighbouring villages.August and accredited the institution with a Four-Star Status. This recognition mainly owes to the college's achievements in curricular and co-curricular fields. Now this college has grown into a premier institution of higher education with several Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate courses and centres of Doctoral Research. The Peer Team visited the departments and assessed the performance. The team interacted with the students, the members of the faculty and the management. The institution became a First Grade college in 1956, and was affiliated to Kerala University. The college volunteered to be assessed and accredited by NAAC in 1999. The Peer Team visited the campus for validation of the Self-Study Report on 31st July, 1st and 2nd and members of the Alumni. After a comprehensive evaluation of the curricular aspects, teaching, learning and evaluation strategies, research, consultancy and extension activities, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, organization and management, the Peer Team was satisfied to grade the college with a high rank.
